What Actually Drives the Price of a Tree Job

Discounts help, but understanding what you are being quoted on helps more. Two trees the same height in two different yards can be very different jobs. Here is what moves the number.

Access

This is the big one, and it surprises people. If we can get the bucket truck within reach of the tree, the work is faster and safer and the price reflects that. If the tree is behind a fence, up a slope, or boxed in by a shed and a pool, we climb it and lower the pieces by rope, and that takes hours instead of one. Same tree, different job.

What is underneath it

A tree standing alone in an open yard can be cut and dropped. A tree leaning over a roof, a fence, a pool, or a neighbor's garage has to come down one controlled piece at a time, and every piece has to be rigged so it lands where we want it. That is skill and time, and it is where the money goes.

Size and lean

Height matters, but diameter and lean matter more. A thick, heavy trunk leaning the wrong way needs more rigging than a taller, straighter tree, because gravity is not helping.

Whether the stump is in the number

Stump grinding is separate work with a separate machine. It is usually worth doing at the same visit while everything is already on site, but make sure you know whether a quote you are comparing includes it or not.

What happens to the wood

Hauling everything off costs more than leaving the logs stacked for you. If you burn wood, say so, and we can cut the trunk to stove length and stack it instead of carrying it away. That is free money back to you.
