Seasoned Wood vs. Green Wood
Not all firewood is ready to burn. Freshly cut, or green, wood still holds a lot of moisture. It is hard to light, it smokes, it burns cool, and it builds up creosote in your chimney. Seasoned wood has dried out for months and burns hot and clean.
If you are buying wood to burn this season, that is the first thing to ask about. Call us and we will be straight with you about what is seasoned and ready now versus what needs more time to dry.
How Much Firewood Do You Need?
Firewood is usually sold by the cord. A full cord is a stack four feet high, four feet deep, and eight feet long. You will also hear half cord and face cord, which are smaller amounts. How much you need depends on how you burn:
- An occasional weekend fire or a fire pit: a face cord often lasts the season
- A wood stove or fireplace used through the winter: a cord or more
- Heating a home mainly with wood: several cords

How to Store It So It Stays Ready to Burn
Good seasoned wood stored badly turns back into wood that will not burn. Three things matter, and none of them cost anything.
Keep it off the ground
Wood stacked directly on soil wicks moisture up from underneath, and the bottom row rots. Pallets, a couple of scrap two by fours, gravel, anything that gets air under the stack.
Cover the top, leave the sides open
This is the one people get backwards. A tarp over the whole pile traps moisture in and the wood sits there sweating all winter. Cover the top few inches to keep rain and snow off and leave the sides completely open so air moves through the stack. That is what actually dries it.
Give it sun and wind
A stack along a sunny wall with the prevailing wind hitting the open face will be noticeably drier by January than the same wood tucked behind the garage in the shade.
One more thing, and it matters more than people think: do not store firewood against your house or inside the garage in bulk. Firewood carries insects, and stacked against the siding it is a direct bridge indoors. Bring in a few days worth at a time and keep the main stack away from the building.
What Burns Well and What Does Not
Hardwood is what you want for heat. Oak, maple, ash, hickory, and cherry are all dense, burn long, and put out real BTUs. Oak takes the longest to season and is worth the wait. Ash is the exception to the seasoning rule because it burns reasonably well even when it has not sat as long, which is one reason there is so much of it around here right now.
Softer woods like pine and spruce light easily and burn fast, which makes them fine for kindling and poor for heating. They also carry more resin, which builds creosote in a chimney faster. Do not build a winter of heat on them.
Never burn pressure treated lumber, painted or stained wood, plywood, pallets of unknown origin, or driftwood in an indoor fireplace or stove. Those release genuinely harmful compounds into your house.
Please Do Not Move Firewood Long Distances
This sounds like a small thing and it is not. Firewood is one of the main ways tree pests spread, and Pennsylvania has dealt with both emerald ash borer and spotted lanternfly moving exactly this way. A load of wood carried in from another county can carry insects that then get established in your neighborhood.
